In a policy paper Safer Streets - More & Better Police the Liberal Democrats have committed themselves to providing 3,000 additional police nationwide to tackle crime and improve detection rates.

Liberal Democrat parliamentary candidate for Birmingham Erdington, Cllr Ann Holtom, has welcomed the news that Erdington Labour MP Sion Simon has announced he is quitting his job as a government junior minister and will not stand for re-election to Parliament at the next general election.

The Liberal Democrats have announced they will fight the General Election on four key principles, designed to make Britain a fairer place. Following a key speech by party leader Nick Clegg, Cllr Ann Holtom, Parliamentary Candidate for Birmingham Erdington, has set out locally the four campaign priorities: fair taxes; a fair start for every child; fair, clean and local politics and a fair, green economy with jobs that last.

Liberal Democrat Councillor Ann Holtom is lending her full support to a major new campaign against hate crime in Birmingham. The campaign, launched by the Safer Birmingham crimefighting Partnership, aims to raise awareness about religious and homophobic crime and encourage victims not to "put up" with it.

Almost four thousand pensioners in Erdington constituency are possibly missing out on cold weather payments which have been triggered by the recent low temperatures, according to research carried out by Tyburn councillor and Erdington Parliamentary candidate Cllr Ann Holtom.

Local Liberal Democrats are urging people to be prepared and take care during the big freeze. Following several days of cold weather and snow, temperatures plummeted to around -10C on Wednesday night. Now the icy weather is beginning to break, slush and slippery footways will bring further problems. There is also a fog warning at present.
